「沈黙と光」西澤立衛 ／ Silence and Light by Ryue Nishizawa
「沈黙と光」という文章によって大きな命題を残し、この世を去ったカーン。その言葉の節々をまるで探偵のように追求し、考古学者のようにその意味を推測し、実際の建築から読み取ろうとする西澤さんの熱意あふれる講義。わからなさを切り捨てず、堂々と共有し、たくさんの解釈と推測でその場を満たすことで、人々に生きる糧を配っているようでもあった。
ルイス・カーンの著作、ましては建築のボキャブラリーにもなじみのない私が突然、空間を意識させられてドキドキした。原初、そこに何もなかったとき、私はどんな空間を必要とするのだろう。
世の中を切り刻む目盛りや価値基準や専門知識を取り去り、ただ人間としてどんな空間にいるべきなのか、それは誰に託すこともできない逼迫した命題だ。空間についての問うことの大切さをまざまざと突きつけられる。疑問符がおおらかに会場を包み込み、そこにいる全ての人たちにとって希望にかわっていった。
12th Hamacho Liberal Arts invited architect, Ryue Nishizawa to talk about ‘Silence and Light’, text by Louis Kahn.
As Nishizawa san mentions, Kahn’s text cannot easily be understood. By interpreting his text, Nishizawa san guide us to never-ending pursuit of the space for human beings. And even cerebrate the questions that does not expect absolute answer.
We tend to have notion that the space can only be made by ‘professionals’. Nishizawa san’s lecture, however, guide us to imagine before architecture starts. We human beings are obliged to ask to ourself what is the space that we want to be, what the ‘Beginning’ of the space was like. Nishizawa san closes the lecture by providing us of full of ‘unscalable’ and ‘undefinable’ element of the life, leaving us to keep pursuing the answer for the future.

Hamacho Liberal Arts is a study group taken place at Hamacho LAB. 1F, Tokyo, where the architectural office o+h is based. By having the opportunity to talk with people who create the values, such as artist, designer, architects, editor, curator etc., and share the process of their project, it aim to broaden the view that is otherwise being limited by their specialities and become an opportunity to unlearn and relearn for people in all levels of social practice.
