アメリカ・ノースカロライナ州ブラック・マウンテンに、1933〜56年の間に存在した伝説的な総合芸術学校「ブラックマウンテン・カレッジ」。少人数の学生と教師が共に過ごす濃厚なコミュニティであり、実験的・進歩的な教育の場であった本校では、四代目学長を務めたジョセフ・アルバースとその妻アニ、ヴァルター・グロピウスらバウハウス出身者の他、バックミンスター・フラー、デ・クーニング夫妻、ジョン・ケージ、マース・カニングハム、柳宗理や濱田庄司らが講師として参加。卒業生としてロバート・ラウシェンバーグ、サイ・トゥオンブリー、ヘレン・フランケンサーラー、レイ・ジョンソンら世界的アーティストを輩出し、戦後の美術界に多大な影響を与えたその足跡を振り返る。
「ブラックマウンテン・カレッジ」は1933-57年まで実験的な芸術をベースにしたリベラル・アーツカレッジ。「学位がない」「自分で卒業を決める」「教師と生徒が共に住む」という大学組織とは思えない特徴。講師と生徒が渾然一体となり、学ぶことに対する定義を取り払った環境で自由に発想し、創造した。時はまさに二つの戦争を挟んだ社会不安が蔓延する世界。確かな価値が簡単に崩されてしまうなかで、何のために誰のために学ぶのか。
カタログの写真を見ながら教育の「場」としての空気の大切さを実感。そこで得た体験は当事者しかわかり得ない。考えること、質問すること、学校とは人が集まり生涯かけて必要な学ぶ姿勢のスキルを得るところ。教師は単なる人生の先輩でしかない、そして彼らも学び途中である。そう思うと、世の中にはどれほどの学ぶことがあることか！
The BMC is not a university organization in the sense that it has “no degrees,” “decides its own graduation,” and “teachers and students live together. ” This liberal arts college was existed from 1933-1957, where Instructors and students became one in an environment where definitions of learning were blurred, and ideas were freely conceived and created. It was a time of social unrest between two wars. In a world where certain values are easily destroyed, what is the purpose of learning and for whom?
Looking at the pictures in the catalog, I realized the importance of the atmosphere of a “place” for education. You have to be involved to understand it. School is a place where people gather and acquire the skills of learning attitude necessary for a lifetime. Teachers are merely seniors in life, and if so, they too are in the process of learning. We have so many things to learn.

建築事務所o+hが拠点とする日本橋浜町LAB１階にて不定期で行っている勉強会。様々なトピックに対して、創造的な方法で向き合っている世界中のアーティスト、デザイナー、建築家、編集者、キュレーターなどの作り手とつながり、彼らのプロジェクトとそれに至るまでのプロセスを共有する。普段、専門分野で分断されがちな視野を広げることで、社会と創造的に関わる姿勢について様々な立場の人々が何度も学び直すことができる場所を目指している。
Hamacho Liberal Arts is a study group taken place at Hamacho LAB. 1F, Tokyo, where the architectural office o+h is based. By having the opportunity to talk with people who create the values, such as artist, designer, architects, editor, curator etc., and share the process of their project, it aim to broaden the view that is otherwise being limited by their specialities and become an opportunity to unlearn and relearn for people in all levels of social practice.
