Subsequence vol.4 August 26, 2021
古今東西のArts & Craftsのもの、こと、人についての話題を集めた雑誌Subsequenceの4号が発売になりました。この号にいくつか寄稿させていただいています。
- 「Three Small Talks ―三つの雑談―」でアメリカ人作家のピコ・アイヤーさんと対談、ならぬ雑談をしています。ピコさんは35年以上、奈良を拠点に世界中を行き来しながら執筆活動を行っています。コロナ禍で旅ならぬ、移動を制限されたなかでも自然と話題は文化を行き来することにつながっていきました。
- 「40年越しのマリア」藤沢の修道院の傍らのアトリエで40年以上にわたりたった一人で全長９メートルにもおよぶマリア像を制作する木彫家の親松英治さんについて取材をしました。親松さんは40歳のときに「一生をかけて取り組めるものを」との思いで、聖母マリア像を制作しはじめます。設置先の目処なく作り始めた作品でしたが86歳になった今、完成を目前にして長崎県南島原市にてマリア観音像として設置しようという動きが起きています。
その他、スロバキアの忘れ去られようとしているモダン建築を現地のアーティストと共同してリソグラフのポスターにしているグループ Black Holeについて、真鶴半島の遠藤貝類博物館で取り扱っている明治から昭和にかけて貝類の研究に捧げた研究者の美しい「貝類図絵」について、小さい記事を書いています。
I wrote a few article for magazine Subsequence 4, that gathers and things/events/people of East to West and now and then.
- About sculptor, Eiji Oyamatsu, who makes the Virgin Mary of 9 metres all by himself for 40 years. People who was inspired by his work are gathering groups to install this work to Minami Shimabara, Nagasaki as a memorial to those who have died during the Shimabara rebellion in 17th century.
- Dialogue with Pico Iyer, American writer based in Nara and travels extensively around the world.
- Beautiful catalogue of shell drawings published by Endo Shell Museum in Manazuru, Kanagara prefecture.
- About group ’Black Hole’ who sheds the light on the forgotten modern architecture by making the riso poster by various local artists.
Mino Soil Exhibition ‘Archeology of Mino’ June 28, 2021

6月8日から13日まで表参道で行われていた展覧会「Archeology of Mino」にて共同プロデューサーとして関わりました。
「MINO SOIL」は岐阜県美濃地方に関する理解を深め、その土を使ったプロダクトの未来を考えるプロジェクトです。最初のエキシビション「Archeology of Mino」では土が陶土となる前、鉱山のあり方を写真や素材そのものを通じて紹介し、プロダクトから素材、資源という捉え方を通じて、悠久の自然の営みと限りある資源のあり方を想像させるような機会を創ります。その素材を解釈し、空間を構成するのは土地特有の素材と人間の営みに根ざしたデザインを行うスタジオ・ムンバイ。フォトグラファーの高野ユリカが撮影した採掘現場の写真とともに土が掘り出される光景を追体験させるような展覧会となっています。自然と人間の営みの関係性が問われる今、過去を知りつつ未来を考える機会になることを。
I was involved as a co-producer of the first exhibition of the MINO SOIL, ‘Archeology of Mino’ under the direction of Glaettli Design Direction.
MINO SOIL is a project to produce the ceramic product that is deeply connected to the environment of Mino region in Gifu prefecture, central Japan. The exhibition, ‘Archeology of Mino’, focuses on the soil itself by showing its pure material and photos of the sheer scale of mining site and generate the opportunity to imagine the link to nature and its limited resource. It is Studio Mumbai, innovative design group based in India, who interprets its resource and material, and come up with scenography of the exhibition. It will also be accompanied with the photography by Yurika Kono, photographer based in Tokyo, for us to know about the massive landscape of mining site and how we human being has lived with it.
自然のなかに転がっているもののほうが、人間がつくったどんなオブジェよりも、ずっと魅力的で、面白いことはよくあることだ。「Archeology of Mino」で展示されているのは作業場に転がっているオブジェだったり、素材そのものだったり。だから触ることだってできる。希少だから価値があるのではなく、私たちが敬意と理解を持って目の前にあるものを見ているからだ。
Often, the nature is much more glamorous and interesting than any man made objects. What is exhibited in ‘Archeology of Mino’ is mostly pure soil and found objects in the factory. It is not unique pieces so you can even touch. The true value lays not because it is rare but because we look at it in certain respect and understanding.

「星の百年」- ‘One hundred years of the star’ November 14, 2020
大阪のTezukayama Galleryでの展覧会「星の百年」に文章を寄稿しました。3人の画家、後藤靖香さん、小沢さかえさん、新藤杏子さんによるグループ展。その作品をつなぐのは、明治時代に生まれ、大正、昭和という時代を星の研究に捧げた野尻抱影という作家の存在です。

I have contributed the text to the group exhibition by 3 painters, ‘One hundred years of the star’ at Tezukayama Gallery in Osaka. This show refers to the writing and research of the astronomer, Hoei Nojiri, who was born in Meiji era and dedicated all his life to share the knowledge on night sky.

人間が何かを作ること。それは目の前に立ち現れる問いに対する答えをもとめて、考えて、手を動かして、自分以外の人と対話をして、試行錯誤することです。
私たちは、アート、デザイン、建築、映像、文学など、様々な分野のなかにどうにか収められた作品、と呼ばれるものに触れています。それは一連のものを作るプロセスのひとつの結果です。だけど、その結果に行き着くまでに切り捨てられていく考えや、失敗や、考えを発展するきっかけになる出来事は、結果以上に豊かなことです。
Materia Primaはつくることのリアリティを共有する小冊子です。作品の制作プロセスや作家のポートレイト、作家や観客との対話など、多角的な切り口から、世界のあり方とそのなかで創造することのつながりを考えます。
Making things is a continuous act of attempt through thinking, playing with hands and talking with others in search for the answer to the question that appears in their mind.
We look at various type of works that fit in such field as art, design, architecture, film and literature…, to name a few. And those works are the result born out of the process of making things. But the unrealized ideas, failure and unexpected incidents that supports the assumption that appears along the way are sometimes much richer than the result itself.
Materia Prima is a small booklet to interview the author who questions the world by creative act in order to share the reality of making. Occasionally created along with the events such as an exhibition and talk, it shares various topics such as the portrait of author, production process and dialogue with the audience, and connect the creative process and the world we live.
- Vol. 1 について
Materia Primaの第一回目は、2020年1月に東京で展覧会を行なったイギリス人アーティスト、アリソン・ターンブルとの対話です。パブリックアートからペインティング、出版物まで、様々なスケールの作品を手がける彼女が、ライフワークとして収集していた市販のノートを使った作品シリーズはどのようにして始まったのか。彼女が何もないところにルールを設定して、その制限の中で自分を解放していく様子を追っていきます。
Materia PrimaはA5サイズの小冊子の形に折り込まれたA2サイズのポスターです。まるで作り手のアタマの中を開いていくように、折り目を開くと問いの結果の全貌が現れます。

The first issue of Materia Prima features British artist, Alison Turnbull who held the exhibition in Tokyo on January 2020. The dialogue with Turnbull, who usually works with diverse scale of work from public art, painting to publication, covers how she started the series of drawing work using the banal notebook paper that she collected all over the world. It unveils the process to set up the rules and limitation by herself before opening her creativity to let her drawing appear in it.
Materia Prima is the A2 size poster that is folded into the A5 size small booklet. The entire view of the work appears after reading the contents and unfolding the pages as if unfolding the thought of the artist.
