シュモン・バザールが数々の共著や展覧会を通じて説明を試みてきた超加速する現代の変化がもたらす現象とはなにか。彼はその感覚を「Change Vertigo（めまいのするような変化）」と呼ぶ。つまり未来が私たちの精神的、感情的、政治的な能力が処理できる以上の速さでやってくるということだ。さらに人間の内面が外の環境を作っている現象を「Extreme Self」と呼び、コロナ・パンデミックがもたらしたものをこの流れのなかで説明する。自己とその他大勢の概念が物理的な集まりを禁止されてよりバーチャルになり、その結果はさざ波のように世界中に届いている。私たちは種として歴史的変化の局面にある。それを後押しするのは生物学的なウィルスと高度なソーシャルメディアの重なりだ。感情的資本主義の時代にようこそ。
In our collaborative work together, Douglas Coupland, Hans Ulrich Obrist and I endeavour to give names to the effects of extreme accelerated change in the present moment. These effects have come to govern our external and internal lives. The sum of these sensations is ‘Change Vertigo’: that unsettling sense of drag where the future arrives at a faster pace than our psychological, emotional and political capabilities can cope with. This talk will chart the evolution of our first book (The Age of Earthquakes: A Guide to the Extreme Present, 2015) to our latest exhibition (Age of You, 2019-2021) and forthcoming book (The Extreme Self,2021). Since the Extreme Self is about how our interior worlds shape the exterior world, the fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic can also be understood through this prism. New conceptions of selfhood and crowds — increasingly virtual, due to the dangers of mass physical gatherings — inform responses to the pandemic all over the world, in rippled ways. As a species, we find ourselves at a unique point of historical mutation — driven by the confluence of a biological virus and advanced social media. Welcome to the century of Emotional Capitalism. ドバイを拠点に世界中を移動する文筆家、編集者、キュレーター。『The Age of Earthquakes: A Guide to the Extreme Present』はキュレーター、ハンス・ウルリッヒ・オブリストと小説家、ダグラス・クープランドとの共著。最近では展覧会「Age of You 」をトロント現代美術館とドバイのジャミール・アーツ・センターで開催、同時に『The Extreme Self』出版予定。共同編集本に『Vita Nova, Drone Fiction, Translated By, Hans Ulrich Obrist Interviews: Volume 2』、『The World of Madelon Vriesendorp』、『Did Someone Say Participate?』、『With/Without』 、『Cities from Zero』など。また「TANK Magazine」の主幹編集、「Bidoun」、「Flashart」の寄稿編集、Global Art Forum at Art Dubaiのコミッショナー、 プラダ財団Thought Council創設メンバーを務めている。
Shumon Basar is a writer, editor and curator. He’s the co-author of The Age of Earthquakes: A Guide to the Extreme Present, with Douglas Coupland and Hans Ulrich Obrist. Together with Coupland and Obrist, he co-curated the large-scale exhibition Age of You at the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto and Jameel Arts Centre Dubai, which previewed their following book, The Extreme Self. His (co)edited books include Vita Nova, Drone Fiction, Translated By, Hans Ulrich Obrist Interviews: Volume 2, The World of Madelon Vriesendorp, Did Someone Say Participate?, With/Without and Cities from Zero. Shumon is Editor at Large at Tank magazine, Contributing Editor at Bidoun and at Flashart. He is Commissioner of the Global Art Forum at Art Dubai and a founding member of Fondazione Prada’s “Thought Council.”
建築事務所o+h主宰の浜町LAB１階にて不定期で行っている勉強会。様々なトピックに対して、創造的な方法で向き合っている世界中のアーティスト、デザイナー、建築家、編集者、キュレーターなどの作り手とつながり、彼らのプロジェクトとそれに至るまでのプロセスを共有する。普段、専門分野で分断されがちな視野を広げることで、社会と創造的に関わる姿勢について様々な立場の人々が何度も学び直すことができる場所を目指している。
Hamacho Liberal Arts is a study group taken place at Hamacho LAB. 1F, Tokyo, initiated by architect o+h. By having the opportunity to talk with people who create the values, such as artist, designer, architects, editor, curator etc., and share the process of their project, it aim to broaden the view that is otherwise being limited by their specialities and become an opportunity to unlearn and relearn for people in all levels of social practice.
