ブラジル北部の内陸地帯にヴァルゼア・ケイマーダという小さな村がある。途方もなく辺鄙で、極度に乾燥した地域にある人口900人ほどのこの村ではその約10%が聴覚障害のある人々だ。彼らは正式な手話を身につけていないかわりに、独自の方法でコミュニケーションをしている。「Directed Games」はその村で聴覚障害の人々がゲームをしたり他愛もない日常会話をする様子を撮影した作品。彼らの会話には言語が存在しないかわりに、それぞれに話を伝えるために身振り手振りを繰り返す。アンドラーデはブラジル人教育学者パウロ・フレイレが1960年代に成人のための識字教育で使用した方法を適用して、彼らが伝えようとしている話の内容のヒントになるような言葉を映像に添えることで、観客が聴覚障害者の会話の世界に入っていく手助けをする。耳の聞こえる人が耳の聞こえない人の言葉を学ぶきっかけをつくるように。

Jogos Dirigidos (Directed Games) puts together a language experience. In Várzea Queimada community, in the Sertão of Piauí, Northeast of Brazil, a place with about 900 inhabitants and a high rate of deaf-mute population, access to water and public investment is scarce, as is the learning of the official Libras, the Brazilian sign language. In the face of all these limitations, Várzea Queimada’s deaf community created its own language.
The film features body and speech exercises, improvising outdoor stages for spontaneous testimonials from a group of 18 local characters, men and women. Most of the statements, most of them untranslated, are revised speech by speech, linking gestures to words, systematizing Várzea Queimada’s gestural lexicon as if we were facing an educational video that teaches a new language, beyond its universe and its own questions. ジョナタス・デ・アンドラーデ Jonathas de Andrade
1982年ブラジル、マセイオ生まれ。現在、レシフェにて活動中。ブラジル北東部特有の文化に人間の普遍的な価値を見出し、映像やインスタレーションといった様々な方法で作品を制作している。主な作品に、荷馬車が禁止にされることに対する抗議のひとつとして、レシフェの街に馬車とその乗り手を一挙に集めて、ゲリラ的に大規模なレースを行った様子を撮影した「Uprising」（2012）、ブラジルの教育学者パウロ・フレイレが1960年代に実践した成人のための識字教育の考え方を現代にも通用するような内容で再制作した「Education for Adults」（2010）、ブラジル北部アマゾン奥地の漁師が釣った魚を捕るのではなく愛撫する「the Fish」（2016）などがある。
Born in 1982, Maceio, Brazil. Lives and works in Recife. Jonathas de Andrade sees the universal values of human being through the culture of Nordeste (North East) in Brazil, and produces the diverse range of art works such as films and installations inspired by that. Some of the main works are ‘Uprising’ (2012), the film taken in order to protest against the banning of horse carriage by city of Recife by holding the intricately-planned giant horse race by gathering men with horse cart from all over the city, ‘Education for Adults’ (2010), the installation that reinterpreted the literary education for adult initiated by Brasilian educational philosopher, Paulo Freire, and remade for contemporary society. ‘Fish'(2016), the film about the fisherman in Amazon who, instead of catching, cuddling the fish that he caught.

Hamacho Liberal Arts is a study group taken place at Hamacho LAB. 1F, Tokyo, initiated by architect o+h. By having the opportunity to talk with people who create the values, such as artist, designer, architects, editor, curator etc., and share the process of their project, it aim to broaden the view that is otherwise being limited by their specialities and become an opportunity to unlearn and relearn for people in all levels of social practice.
