When I went to Alison Turnbull’s studio, she was drawing with a very thin mechanical pencil – it seemed like an informatics diagram, yet in a very beautiful colour range.
Alison’s abstract drawing is like a textile. It is satisfying to look at, just like touching the surface of a repetitive woven pattern. The bright, sophisticated and pure colours of her painting make us realise the beauty and comfort of logic in the world.
Alison translates information from architectural plans, diagrams or charts into visual language. She reads and exposes the logic hidden in nature, by extracting the colour components of butterflies, interpreting the growth pattern of plants and juxtaposing variations of colours associated with the different names of apples. Not only the logic of nature, she also uses industrial products such as notebooks, graph paper or printed paper of all kinds, to which she adds graphical drawing by interpreting the landscape of the paper. The subtle and beautiful drawing creates sounds and rhythms in the blank man-made product.
By orchestrating such simple elements as line, pattern and colour, Alison makes invisible logic visible, or vice versa.
アリソン・ターンブルのスタジオに入ったとき、彼女はちょうど細いシャープペンシルで何かを描いているところでした。機械の設計図か、私が全くわからない数学の方式のようにも見えましたが、とにかくその色の連なりが美しいのです。
明るく、品が良く、清々しい色合いの抽象的なドローイングは織物のようで、織り目のレペティションをじっと見たときに感じる心地よさがあります。
アリソンの作品のもとになっているのは、数値や建築図面やダイヤグラムなどの一見、無味乾燥な情報です。蝶の羽の色彩を分解したり、植物が成長する法則をドローイングにしたり、異なるリンゴの名前を多種多様な赤い色に色分けしたり、自然界にある膨大かつ壮大な情報を掘り起こして、図像に翻訳し、絵画に落とし込みます。自然の法則だけでなく、人間が作ったインダストリアルな素材も彼女にとっては貴重なフィールドです。市販のノートや方眼紙の線にリズムや法則を見出して、その紙の素質に合うような色彩や形を加えます。その美しい図像は工業製品に音とリズムを与えているようです。
線や図形や色彩などのシンプルなツールを使って、アリソン・ターンブルは見えないものを見えるようにしています。そして、その逆も然り。
