Out of line, the first solo exhibition in Japan by British artist Alison Turnbull, opens at Saicoro, Koenji, Tokyo.
Out of line features work from her ongoing series of drawings made on notebook papers collected in towns and cities around the world. The type of notebooks varies from exercise books to bank ledgers and graph paper and so on. And some of them are from Japan. Turnbull carefully reads the colours, lines and grids originally printed in the notebooks and adds her own layers of understanding, creating new perspectives on paper. Out of line is accompanied by a book designed by Hideyuki Saito.
イギリス人アーティスト、アリソン・ターンブルの日本初個展、書肆サイコロにて開催。
ターンブルは一見、絵画とは全く関係のなさそうな、建築図面や製図、数式などの無味乾燥な情報をもとに独自の視点で平面作品を校正します。今回の展覧会では、彼女が世界中で集めた大量生産のノートや紙にすでに印刷された罫線や矩形をベースにして幾何学的な模様を描いていく作品群約20点を展示。素材の中には、今回の展覧会のために新たに日本から送られてきた紙にドローイングを施した作品も含まれています。グラフィックデザイナー、サイトヲヒデユキ装幀による本「Out of Line」発行。
About Alison Turnbull : Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Alison Turnbull studied in Madrid, Spain before graduating from Bath Academy of Art. In addition to her drawings, Alison Turnbull is known for the intricate abstract paintings she creates from found materials such as cluster diagrams, architectural plans and star charts. She has completed several architectural commissions and in 2020 was appointed artist/curator at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. Her work is included in the Arts Council Collection, the British Council Collection, the Government Art Collection, the Imperial War Museum and other public and private collections.
Alison Turnbull lives and works in London and is represented by Matt’s Gallery.
アリソン・ターンブル：コロンビア、ボゴタ生まれ。スペインのマドリッドで学んだ後、イギリスのバス・アカデミー・オブ・アートを卒業。ドローイング作品のほかにも、クラスター・ダイアグラムや建築図面、星図などの既存の素材をもとに緻密な抽象画を描くことで知られている。数々の建築プロジェクトにも参加し作品を制作、2020年にはケンブリッジ大学ペンブルック・カレッジのアーティストおよびキュレーターに任命されている。ターンブルの作品はイギリスのアーツカウンシルやブリティッシュ・カウンシルのコレクション、政府アートコレクション、帝国戦争博物館をはじめとした公共、民間のコレクションに収蔵されている。マッツ・ギャラリーに所属し、現在ロンドンを拠点に活動している。
About Saicoro : Saicoro is an independent publisher and gallery space in Koenji, Japan. Alongside publications designed by Hideyuki Saito, Saicoro also presents exquisite objects, past and present.
書肆サイコロ：書籍と骨董を扱う出版社兼ギャラリー。グラフィックデザイナー、サイトヲヒデユキによるデザインの書籍を中心に展示するほか、定期的に企画展を行なっている。
